Eclipses
I have been fortunate to see many solar eclipses in my time. Certainly not as many as the most ardent of eclipse chasers (also called umbraphiles!), but enough to tell my grandchildren about. Each eclipse has been special in its own way. For example my first total eclipse was in 1999 in Cornwall in the United Kingdom (of all places!) which I saw despite incredibly unpromising weather conditions. I also saw a wonderful annular eclipse in Bryce Canyon, Utah in 2012, which stands out in my memory because, as well as being my first annular eclipse, was also observed in the most astonishing location imaginable. (Bryce also happens to be the best place I have ever come across for night astronomy - no light pollution and pristine skies!). Then there is the total eclipse of 2017, which I observed from Jackson Hole in Wyoming. This was described as 'The Great American Eclipse' since it was confined entirely to the U.S.A. I saw it from first contact to fourth in a clear blue sky - fantastic!
